The Art Center Cinema will present A Will for the Woods, as part of a film series in conjunction with the exhibition “Rooted in Soil” in October and November.

September 23, 2015 — November 29, 2015

“Rooted in Soil” was organized by the DePaul Art Museum, DePaul University, Chicago.
Curators Laura Fatemi, assistant director of DePaul Art Museum, and her daughter Farrah Fatemi, an environmental scientist and assistant professor at Saint Michael’s College, Vermont, combined their knowledge of art and science to explore the underappreciated role of soil in human life. “Rooted in Soil” draws from the fields of visual art and environmental science to promote a deeper understanding of the life-sustaining ecosystem that lies beneath our feet. The exhibition brings together work by six contemporary artists who explore our connection to this living biosphere. Through metaphor and analogy, acute observations of natural states, or by incorporating biological science into their work, these artists bring focus to our relationship to the land, often with soil itself becoming subject and material.

Artists featured in the exhibition include Jane Fulton Alt, Chicago-based photographer; Julia Goodman, San Francisco-based interdisciplinary artist; Jenny Kendler, Chicago-based artist and the first artist-in-residence for the environmental advocacy group Natural Resource Defense Council; Jae Rhim Lee, 2011 TED Global Fellow and currently a fellow at the Hasso Platner Institute of Design at Stanford University;  Claire Pentecost, Chicago-based artist, writer, and professor of photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; and Justin Rang,  a German artist and filmmaker currently living in London.
